ANDERSON PACKAGING SUPPORTS
HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS
10-19-2005
Anderson Packaging has shown its support for
its friends in the Gulf Coast Region recently by providing
both financial
support and relief aid assistance for the disaster recovery
effort. Anderson employees made a financial contribution of
$11,000 and Anderson Packaging as a corporation matched that
contribution totaling $22,000. Anderson’s parent company,
AmerisourceBergen, provided it’s own financial contribution
exceeding $700,000. This amount was raised both by the corporation
and the AmerisourceBergen employees themselves through a corporate
match program.
In addition to financial support, Anderson Packaging employee
Vicky Brown traveled to the region to lend assistance to victims
and the relief effort on behalf of the company and the Red
Cross, for which she has been a volunteer for more than 25
years. Ms. Brown provided assistance as an aid worker in the
communications effort over a three-week period in September,
focusing on the ravaged Mississippi Gulf Coast area. She provided
assistance directly in shelters and in coordinating efforts
between shelters.
“What I saw in the region is really difficult to describe”,
said Ms.Brown. “The level of devastation is really hard
to comprehend without witnessing it firsthand. In addition
to the destruction to the hotels and businesses, over 150,000
houses were devastated just in that three-country region of
Mississippi that I visited. When I arrived, the Red Cross had
already served over 25,000,000 meals to victims. These people
are completely dependent on the Red Cross effort because their
homes, jobs, and livelihood have been stripped away. There
were more than 270,000 people stationed in the few hotels that
remained. That is in addition to the people residing in the
various Red Cross shelters in the region. This hurricane relief
effort is already the largest feeding initiative in the history
of the Red Cross. There is also a wide scale effort to get
money directly into the hands of the victims. For the majority
of these people, their life and financial security has been
completely stripped away from them, practically overnight.”
According
to Jim Peterson, Vice President of Human Resources, “Anderson
has always had a commitment to the community and this tragedy
is no exception. These people who have been displaced and had
their lives turned upside down are our friends, coworkers,
and family. We felt we owed it to them to make whatever efforts
we could to help in their recovery.”
