AmerisourceBergen Packaging Group Offers Innovative New F=1 Compliance Prompting Package Solution: CIAB - Compliance In A BottleTM
2-21-2008

Rockford, IL, February 21, 2008 - The AmerisourceBergen Packaging Group is pleased to announce the commercialization of CIAB - Compliance in a Bottle, its exciting new Child Resistant and Senior Friendly compliance prompting package. The CIAB design features a rigid plastic outer for protection and convenience and a thermoformed blister unit for prompting patient compliance with the medication's dosing requirements. The design has achieved F=1, the highest level of Child Resistance in the Consumer Product Safety Commission's test protocol. CIAB was also successful in the Senior Friendly testing protocol due to its simple and intuitive opening feature. The CIAB package features a unique Push Down and Slide opening sequence proven to be extremely consumer friendly and convenient.

The CIAB package is a different approach to prompting patient compliance. The package features an innovative and durable rigid plastic outer shell similar to a bottle-and-cap design for product protection, portability, convenience, and Child Resistance. Contained inside the package is a thermoformed blister unit guiding the patient to follow their dosing regiment with graphics and supportive text.

"It's clear that patient compliance is one of the most serious issues facing the pharmaceutical industry today," says Shawn Reilley, President, Anderson Packaging, of the AmerisourceBergen Packaging Group. "Compliance, persistence, and medication adherence is a complex issue. Studies have shown the effectiveness of compliance prompting packaging in leading to better adherence and ultimately better health for the patient. The CIAB design was in direct response to help address this issue in a convenient and user friendly format. We feel it can be very powerful in promoting better health for consumers."

CIAB is available in three standard sizes designed for speed-to-market. Designs can also be customized to meet unique requirements and extended dosing regiments. Anticounterfeiting technologies such as RFID can easily be integrated into the package to meet developing pharmaceutical Track & Trace requirements to deter counterfeiting and product diversion.

About Patient Noncompliance, Adherence, and Persistency

Patient compliance and persistence are two of the most critical issues facing the healthcare industry today. Studies have shown that pharmaceutical non-compliance is responsible for over 125,000 deaths each year, at least 10% of hospital admissions, and 23% of otherwise unnecessary nursing care facility admissions. Experts agree that compliance packaging is one of the most effective tools in reducing the frequency of these occurrences.
